What was your life like before you received the COVID-19 vaccine?

Prior to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, my life was wonderful. I was very active through exercise, hiking, and spending time with my family. I could breathe without the assistance of medication.

Describe the symptoms and the timeline of the reaction.

On April 1, 2021, I received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at HealthLinc in Valparaiso, Indiana. Weeks following the shot, I began to experience side effects that could easily be contributed to seasonal allergies or a virus. Under the care of my healthcare provider, my symptoms were managed through antibiotics and oral and inhaled steroids. My healthcare provider did not considered my symptoms to be a result of the COVID-19 vaccination, the probability of it happening was so rare.

On the morning of May 6, 2021, my 20-year daughter found me passed out on the bathroom floor. I was taken to the emergency room at Northwest Health-Porter. After extensive testing, the medical team determined that I had a massive blood clot in my lungs (pulmonary embolism) and a clot-in-transit in the right atrium of my heart. I was immediately rushed into emergency surgery to remove the clot in my heart and lungs. While in the ICU recovering, I developed an additional clot in my left leg, resulting in an additional procedure. In total, I spent nine days in the hospital. Through multiple blood tests, it was determined the blood clots were a result of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Last week marked the one-year anniversary of my ordeal. I am still on blood thinners as the vaccine is still causing my blood to clot. It is unknown if and when I will be able to no longer need medical intervention through blood thinners.

What would you like others to know?

I like many others received the COVID-19 shot because it was the right thing to do, I was protecting my family, co-workers, and friends. Those of use who have long-term effects of the cause of the vaccine are left without hope. We deserve financial compensation, not to be forgotten.
